Good Faith Estimate (GFE)
At Birch Hill Behavioral Health, we are committed to transparency and affordability in mental health care. As part of your right to make informed decisions about your care, you are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate of the expected costs of services, under federal and state law.
What Is a Good Faith Estimate?
Under the No Surprises Act (effective January 1, 2022), health care providers are required to give clients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the total expected charges for non-emergency services. This is called a Good Faith Estimate (GFE).
In Massachusetts, this requirement is aligned with state efforts to improve cost transparency and access to behavioral health services.
Who Will Receive a GFE?
You will receive a Good Faith Estimate if:
You are uninsured.
You are self-paying and choosing not to use insurance, including out-of-network services.
You request a GFE, even if you intend to use insurance.
What Will Be Included?
The Good Faith Estimate will include:
The anticipated cost of your initial intake appointment.
The projected frequency and cost of follow-up sessions (e.g., weekly psychotherapy).
Any additional services or fees expected as part of your care (e.g., group therapy, documentation requests).
The valid time period for the estimate (typically 12 months unless otherwise specified).
We understand that mental health treatment is dynamic and individualized. Your actual care may vary over time, and we will work with you to review and update your estimate as needed.
Your Rights
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least one business day before your scheduled service.
You may request a GFE at any time before or during treatment.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your GFE, you have the right to dispute the bill through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Patient-Provider Dispute Resolution Process.
